Ethiopia Celebrating 119th Anniversary of Battle of Adwa!

The Battle of Adwa, in which Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II united to defeat an invading force of Italian troops on March 2, 1896, was one of the most significant turning points in the history of modern Africa.
Empress Taitu’s presence in the battle of Adowa is a clear testimony for the active role women played in the history of Ethiopia. This is a legacy that has been passed down to generations. Empress Taitu’s presence in the midst of the army was a moral boost that motivated them to die for the sovereignty of the nation.
The Battle of Adwa cost Italy around 5,216 killed, 1,428 wounded, and approximately 2,500 captured. In addition, over 11,000 rifles and most of the Italian’s heavy equipment was lost and captured by Menelik’s forces. Ethiopian forces suffered approximately 7,000 killed and 10,000 wounded in the battle. As a result of the Battle of Adwa, the Italians entered into negotiations with Menelik which resulted in the Treaty of Addis Ababa.
