Prof. Dr. Aberra Mogessie,

Prof. Dr. Aberra Mogessie, President of the Geological Society of Africa and ASI Fellow, has been elected Vice President of the Austrian Mineralogical Society this past January 17, 2011.This is one of the oldest Mineralogical Societies,established in Vienna in 1901. It is the first time in its history that an African became elected to serve this distinguished society in this position.

Prof. Dr. Aberra Mogessie, also has been awarded the NIGERIAN MINING AND GEOSCIENCES SOCIETY (NMGS) AWARD  – NMGS/AMNI Petroleum/Oyawoye Award during the Annual Conference of the NMGS held in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria, 6 to 11 March, 2011. This event was sponsored by AMNI International Petroleum Development Company Ltd (AMNI) in honour of Prof MO Oyawoye, FNMGS, the first African Professor of Geology, a renowned petrologist and the father of the Geological Society of Africa and its first President. The Award is open to any hard rock geologist of any nationality who has made significant contributions to hard rock geology of the African continent.

Seit über zwanzig Jahren lehrt und forscht Ao.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Aberra Mogessie vom Institut für Erdwissenschaften der Uni Graz bereits in Österreich. Seine erste Heimat hat der gebürtige Äthiopier aber nicht vergessen. Ganz im Gegenteil, seine erfolgreiche Karriere sieht er als Verpflichtung, sich für die Förderung der Erdwissenschaften in Afrika einzusetzen. Im Hinblick auf den Rohstoff-Reichtum des Kontinents, kommt dort vor allem der Lagestättenforschung besondere Bedeutung zu.  read more
